Following coverage in the Herald Sun by Carly Douglas, VFPA was interviewed on 3AW about the growing threat of cheap foreign timber flooding the Australian market.
Victorian timber manufacturers are concerned that with global supply chains currently in flux and with traditional US export markets narrowing, that excess timber from Europe, China and Canada could be redirected to markets like ours.
In the Herald Sun article, VFPA warned that these are not theoretical risks. If dumped imports take hold, we risk ‘hollowing-out’ our sovereign manufacturing capacity and losing control over the cost, quality and availability of timber that is vital for housing and housing products 🏡
The VFPA is calling on all governments to get on the front-foot:
🔹 Prioritise Australian-manufactured timber in government procurement
🔹 Mandate clear country-of-origin for timber imports and support Australian-made
🔹 Encourage major retailers like Bunnings and Mitre 10 to back Australian-made manufacturers
